British government announces extension of CE marking recognition

Originally planned transition period for the introduction of UKCA labelling on 31 December 2024 is extended indefinitely

The UK Department of Trade and Industry announced in a press release on 01 August 2023 that the recognition of the CE marking in the UK will be extended indefinitely. The originally planned transition period of 31 December 2024 is therefore no longer valid and the CE marking will be recognised in the UK until further notice.

A total of 18 laws and regulations under the UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT) are affected by this adjustment. These include:

  • Toys
  • Pyrotechnics
  • recreational craft and personal watercraft
  • simple pressure vessels
  • Electromagnetic compatibility
  • non-automatic weighing instruments
  • Measuring instruments
  • Measuring vessels Bottles
  • Lifts
  • Equipment for potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX)
  • Radio equipment
  • Pressure equipment
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Gas appliances
  • Machinery
  • Outdoor equipment
  • Aerosols
  • Low voltage electrical equipment

Different rules apply to medical devices, construction products, cableways, transportable pressure equipment, unmanned aerial systems, rolling stock, marine equipment and eco-design. The authorities responsible for these sectors have not communicated their plans as of today and will publish them in due course.

To sell products in the UK, companies will be given the choice of using either UKCA or CE marking.
