Carbon Footprint

Carbon Footprint

Calculation and verification of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 eq.)

Carbon footprinting is an assessment method that enables organizations, companies and service providers to more accurately calculate the direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions from an organization or product, as well as identify potential for improvement. This  can reduce potential environmental impacts and helps companies to achieve their net-zero targets.

There are two different types of the carbon footprint*:

  • Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCP)

The CCP considers the total greenhouse gas emissions resulting from direct or indirect impacts of an organization's operations.

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) and the World Resources Institute & World Business Council for Sustainable Development, as well as ISO 14064-1, are the original standards for the inventory of organization's greenhouse gas emissions and provides a guidance framework for measuring and reporting organization-related greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)

The PCF considers the greenhouse gas emissions that are produced during the entire life cycle of a product / service (from the procurement of raw materials through processing, manufacturing and distribution to use and the end of life emissions).

The so-called life cycle assessment is a holistic method to determine the product carbon footprint. ISO 14067 provides guidance for calculating product-specific emissions, while ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 deal with systematic analysis to determine the potential environmental impacts of a product system.

The calculation of the carbon footprint (both CCP and PCF) covers three scopes:

  1. Scope 1: Direct and indirect emissions resulting from production manufacturing.
  2. Scope 2: Emissions from the purchase or generation of electricity, heat or steam for the respective product or company.
  3. Scope 3: Emissions emitted during the extraction, purchase and transport of raw materials used, as well as end-of-life emissions.

Bureau Veritas has extensive experience in calculating as well as verifying product-specific and organization-specific Carbon Footprints (CFV) according to international standards. Verification by an experienced and trusted organization such as Bureau Veritas is a strong indication of a company's commitment to sustainable operations.
