New marking requirements for products placed on the market in Great Britain

With the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union (EU) on December 31, 2020, new requirements and regulations will come into force for the United Kingdom, as it is now a separate regulatory and legal area. One of these changed requirements is the planned introduction of the United Kingdom Conformity Assessed (UKCA). Originally, it was planned that products exported to the United Kingdom (England, Wales and Scotland) would have to display a UKCA marking from January 01, 2025. Until this date, a transition period was to apply and products with a valid CE marking may also be placed on the market in Great Britain. However, on August 1, the British government announced an indefinite extension of the planned transition period for the introduction of the UKCA marking. I.e. CE markings still retain their validity in the UK.

UKCA UPDATE FROM 07.08.2023

Please note that the British government has announced far-reaching relaxations. We have summarized these for you in a news article. But postponed is not canceled. The contents of this page remain valid (this applies in particular to products that do not yet have a CE conformity assessment).

WHEN WILL THE UKCA MARKING BE MANDATORY?

The UKCA marking can be used from 1 January 2021. However, in most cases the CE marking will still be valid until 31.12.2022 so that companies can familiarise themselves with the new requirements. From 01.01.2023, only the UKCA mark will be permitted in the UK. Northern Ireland is an exception to this.

Frequently asked questions

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE UKCA AND CE MARKINGS?

The UKCA marking is only valid for the UK and requires technical documentation in English only. Analogous to the CE marking for the EU-27 area, this applies to a wide variety of products. The requirements are largely identical for the time being.

Please note that the UKCA label applies exclusively to goods marketed in the UK. Products marketed in the EU are still subject to the CE marking. The UKCA label is not valid here.

Will CE MARKINGS RETAIN THEIR VALIDITY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM?

Until 31.12.2022, a transitional phase will still be tolerated by the UK government, during which the CE marking will continue to be valid. From 01.01.2023, only the UKCA mark will be accepted in the UK.

These and other questions can be found in our FAQ on the UKCA marking.

AUFZEICHNUNG UNSERES ONLINE-SEMINARS
