New marking requirements for products placed on the market in Great Britain

With the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union (EU) on 31 December 2020, new requirements and regulations will come into effect for the United Kingdom, as it is now a separate regulatory and legal area. One of these new requirements is the introduction of the United Kingdom Conformity Assessed (UKCA). According to this, products exported to Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) must bear a UKCA marking from 01 January 2023. Until then, a transitional period applies; products with a valid CE marking can still be placed on the market in Great Britain until 31 December 2022. The CE marking is therefore only valid until the end of 2022. Northern Ireland is an exception to this.

CARRYING OUT UKCA CONFORMITY ASSESSMENT

Companies wishing to place goods on the UK market should address the new boundary conditions for conformity assessment at an early stage to ensure continued access.

With many years of experience in carrying out conformity assessments, we can help you gain access to the UK market. We are familiar with both the EU regulations and the new UK requirements and can respond to your individual needs. Thanks to our global presence, we are positioned along the entire supply chain.

UKCA UPDATE VOM 30.06.2022

Please note that the British government has announced far-reaching easements. We have summarised these for you in a news article. But postponed is not cancelled. The contents of this page remain valid (this applies in particular to products that do not yet have a CE conformity assessment).

WHEN WILL THE UKCA MARKING BE MANDATORY?

The UKCA marking can be used from 1 January 2021. However, in most cases the CE marking will still be valid until 31.12.2022 so that companies can familiarise themselves with the new requirements. From 01.01.2023, only the UKCA mark will be permitted in the UK. Northern Ireland is an exception to this.

Frequently asked questions

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE UKCA AND CE MARKINGS?

The UKCA marking is only valid for the UK and requires technical documentation in English only. Analogous to the CE marking for the EU-27 area, this applies to a wide variety of products. The requirements are largely identical for the time being.

Please note that the UKCA label applies exclusively to goods marketed in the UK. Products marketed in the EU are still subject to the CE marking. The UKCA label is not valid here.

Will CE MARKINGS RETAIN THEIR VALIDITY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM?

Until 31.12.2022, a transitional phase will still be tolerated by the UK government, during which the CE marking will continue to be valid. From 01.01.2023, only the UKCA mark will be accepted in the UK.

These and other questions can be found in our FAQ on the UKCA marking.
