This ISO 14001:2026 Lead Auditor course, certified by CQI-IRCA, has been developed to provide participants with the competencies required to plan, conduct and lead audits of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) – in accordance with international standards.

What are the main objectives of the training programme?

Through a structured and practical approach, the course enables participants to understand the fundamental principles of ISO 14001:2026 as well as the auditing guidelines of ISO 19011 and ISO/IEC 17021. Particular attention is given to the identification of environmental aspects, compliance obligations and performance improvements, in order to support organizations in enhancing their environmental performance.

Participants acquire the skills required to plan audit activities, conduct audits effectively and report results clearly and professionally, including communication with clients and stakeholders. The course also provides insights into the differences between EMS and QMS audits and thereby strengthens auditing competence across different management systems.

The training methodology combines theoretical sessions, interactive discussions and practical exercises, which are based on a realistic fictional company. The scenarios reflect typical procedures, work instructions and data, enabling participants to address the most common challenges encountered during EMS audits.

Where does the EMS Lead Auditor ISO 14001:2026 course take place?

The courses are conducted in dedicated training centres or can be organized in-house at the client’s premises, with the possibility of adapting content and structure to specific organizational requirements. The number of participants for customized courses depends on the available capacity.

What are the prerequisites for the Lead Auditor ISO 14001:2026 course?

Participants must have completed secondary education.
Basic knowledge of report writing (Report Writing) is recommended.

In addition, participants should have knowledge of the fundamental principles of environmental management, including the objectives of an EMS such as improving environmental performance, fulfilling compliance obligations and achieving environmental targets. Familiarity with the requirements of ISO 14001, acquired through professional experience, is also expected.

Knowledge of the fundamentals of management systems, including the PDCA cycle and the interrelationships between core elements such as leadership, policy, planning, implementation, performance evaluation and continual improvement, is considered essential.

Is there a final examination and certification?

The course includes both a continuous assessment and a final examination, which serves to evaluate the participants’ progress and overall competence.

The examination may be conducted in different formats depending on the course format:

  • Classroom examination (2 hours),
  • Virtual examination (2 hours),
  • Or CQI online examination (1 hour and 45 minutes), which is generally prioritized.

Participants are also assessed during the practical exercises. Successful completion of both the examination and the continuous assessment leads to the issuance of a Certificate of Achievement and fulfills the formal training requirements of the CQI-IRCA EMS Auditor certification scheme. Participants who do not fully meet the requirements receive a Certificate of Attendance. They have the opportunity to retake the examination once within 12 months from the last day of the course.
 

EMS Lead Auditor ISO 14001. What are the contents of the course?

The course covers all key aspects required to conduct effective EMS audits, including environmental topics and the structure of environmental management systems, with a focus on the context of the organization, leadership, planning, support and operational processes.

It also addresses performance evaluation and improvement measures as well as environmental legislation and compliance audits. Participants deepen their understanding of audit management techniques, accreditation and certification processes (ISO 17021, IAF MD1), as well as the requirements for auditor competence in accordance with ISO 19011 and CQI-IRCA.

The programme is completed with practice-oriented workshops and feedback sessions and thus ensures an applied and results-oriented learning experience.
