RSPO Certification
CERTIFICATION OF THE PALM OIL SUPPLY CHAIN
Today, palm oil is the most widely produced vegetable oil in the world. Palm oil, used in both the food and non-food industries, plays a critical role in the economies of producing countries and in the livelihoods of millions of people. However, consumers are increasingly critical of palm oil, partly due to media reports denouncing the destruction of the rainforest for palm oil plantations. For these reasons, the use of RSPO certified palm oil demonstrates organizations' commitment to maintaining a sufficient supply without harming the living conditions of local communities and the biodiversity of the ecosystems involved.
WHAT IS RSPO CERTIFICATION?
Founded in 2004, RSPO Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil is a Non-Profit Association that aims to promote the cultivation and use of sustainable palm oil. There are seven sectors of the palm oil industry involved in RSPO's decision-making process, including: growers, producers, processors and traders, banks and investors, NGOs dedicated to environmental protection and social development.
The RSPO certification of plantations based on social (safeguarding the rights of indigenous populations, adhering to occupational health and safety standards, etc.) and ecological (prohibition of natural forest clearing; implementation of water management and soil erosion prevention measures, etc.) criteria guarantees that palm oil is produced in a manner that is both socially responsible and environmentally sustainable.
Thanks to its membership in the RSPO network, Bureau Veritas can offer integrated audits along the supply chain in order to meet all the needs of the sectors involved.
HOW TO OBTAIN THE RSPO CERTIFICATION?
The main stages of the certification process proposed by Bureau Veritas include:
- Completion of the application/questionnaire and selection of the supply chain model
- Definition of the contract
- On-site audit
- Issuance of the certificate, in the absence of non-conformities
