Safety management systems in the logistics chain

In today's global business world, security management is an increasingly complex challenge for all industrial sectors and especially for supply chains. Logistical processes often run across borders. Supply chain partners operate globally and often face changing national policies and business processes. Companies want to ensure an increased level of security both in identifying potential risks, assessing risks and implementing risk and hazard mitigation measures. This can prevent business processes, and thus the overall success of the company, from being adversely affected.

WHAT IS ISO 28000?

With the ISO 28000 standard, a safety management system has been developed that is jointly applicable for transport and logistics companies. The requirements include the examination of all important aspects to increase security within the entire supply chain. These include the areas of: Financing, production, information management, infrastructure for packaging, storage, and the movement of goods between different modes of transportation and delivery points. Among other things, compliance with legal requirements and the handling of identified security risks are audited on the basis of ISO 14001 and ISO 9001.

FAQ - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHO DOES ISO 28000 APPLY TO?

ISO 28000 is applicable to all companies in the logistics industry and to shipping companies, and is required by national and international customers. It addresses companies that want to implement or expand a proven safety management system, as well as organizations of all types and sizes that operate in areas such as manufacturing, services, warehousing and transportation related to production or supply chains.

HOW ARE ISO 28000, ISO 9001 AND ISO 14001 RELATED?

ISO 28000 is another building block of the integrated management system and complements the areas of quality, environment and occupational safety with safety in the overall supply chain. ISO 28000 is compatible with ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management). The standard is based on a Plan-Do-Check-Act management system modeled on the proven ISO 14001 framework. The risk-based approach of ISO 14001 is also similar to that of the ISO 28000 standard.

DOES THE INTRODUCTION AND INTEGRATION OF ISO 28000 INVOLVE A MAJOR INVESTMENT?

For industrial logistics companies and supply chain partners, most of the requirements of the standard are the same as those that exist on the customer side. The implementation of the standard results, from the analysis to the structuring and approach, in the compliance with your customer specific requirements and therefore represents a limited effort for organization and documentation.

IS ISO 28000 RECOGNIZED BY OTHER SAFETY MANAGEMENT INITIATIVES?

ISO 28000 has been recognized by the EU Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) initiative.
