In March 2018, the new international standard ISO 45001:2018 was published, replacing BS OHSAS 18001. GOALS OF THE NEW ISO 45001

Similar to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018 follows the common High Level Structure to simplify the integration of different standards. The high level structure guarantees structural compatibility. All new management system standards will be unified on this basis and thus provide a basis for integrated certification. This is intended to provide an identical structure and definition as well as the uniform use of core texts and terms.

In addition to the legally prescribed requirements, such as those of a specialist for occupational safety, ISO 45001 increasingly addresses the responsibility of management. In this way, laws and regulations are given even greater prominence so that occupational health and safety can continue to exist and grow. In addition, the optimization of processes in companies is focused on and the working conditions within value chains are being analyzed.

THE INTRODUCTION OF ISO 45001:2018

The first proposal for the new standard was already presented in March 2013 and has been revised twice until today, before the final version of the new standard for occupational health and safety came into force in March 2018.

March 2013:  Submission of the proposal for the development of an international health and safety standard

March 2018:  Publication of the new ISO 45001

June 2018:     Bureau Veritas receives accreditation for ISO 45001:2018 according to UKAS

May 2019:      Bureau Veritas receives accreditation for ISO 45001:2018 according to SAS

March 2020: No further BS OHSAS 18001:2007 certificates will be issued

March 2021: Certificates according to BS OHSAS 18001:2007 lose their validity

TRANSITION TO THE NEW ISO 45001:2018

On 12 March 2018, ISO 45001:2018 was finally published as the world's first uniform standard for occupational health and safety management and will replace the existing BS OHSAS 18001:2007 standard after a three-year transition period.

Since the publication of the new standard, Bureau Veritas has already converted all customers with non-accredited certificates according to BS OHSAS 18001 to accredited procedures. Migration audits in accordance with UKAS can already take place today and migration audits in accordance with DAkkS procedures are also expected to take place towards the end of 2019.
