RISK-BASED AUDIT TIME CALCULATION FOR IATF CERTIFICATIONS

May 28 2021

The IATF has developed a new concept for calculating audit time.

In the automotive industry, the globally recognized quality management standard IATF 16949:2016 is important evidence. Compliance with the standard shows customers that the company meets quality standards and is undergoing a continuous improvement process.

To meet the ever-increasing requirements, the IATF has developed a new concept that calculates the minimum audit days for IATF certification more precisely. This is done on the basis of the calculated customer risk. The update was published on February 23, 2021. Additional audit time must be scheduled for suppliers who do not meet the customer targets in the scorecards.

Accordingly, the new concept specifies how audit time must be extended for certified organizations that are Tier-1-suppliers to an IATF OEM. To do this, a set number of hours will be added to the audit if Tier-1-suppliers do not meet the quality and delivery performance targets set by IATF OEMs. This allows an IATF-recognized certification body, such as Bureau Veritas, to use the additional audit time to focus on the corrective action process and preventing reoccurrences, including for related processes and products.

The new regulations were adopted in the 5th edition of the "Sanctioned Interpretations" (SI 26 - 28)". Here the method for implementing this concept is defined. The detailed Sanctioned Interpretations are available via the IATF Global Oversight website and are valid until June 30, 2021.

What Changes are coming to iatf certified organizations?

All certified organizations with IATF OEMs as customers are required to provide all IATF OEM scorecards 3 months prior to the scheduled audit. Based on the new concept of additional audit time, the certification body will increase the audit time accordingly if the IATF OEM quality and delivery performance targets are not met. In addition, if the certification body auditor determines that the IATF OEM quality and delivery performance objectives were not met during the minimum one-hour review of data and changes prior to the audit, additional audit time will also be calculated
