Apr 15 2026

STRENGTHENING THE ROLE OF LEADERSHIP TO ADDRESS NEW ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES

On April 15, the new ISO 14001:2026 was published.

The transition period expected for companies will presumably be 3 years; the official dates will be established by the national Accreditation Bodies and by the Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, as well as the transition arrangements, which will be available shortly.

NEW ISO 14001:2026. MAIN UPDATES AND CHANGES

The new standard introduces several updates, reflecting current environmental priorities and sustainability expectations. The forthcoming changes will help organizations strengthen their environmental performance and better address new global challenges.

What are the main changes of the new ISO 14001:2026?

The new standard include:

  • An analysis of environmental risks and opportunities with a long-term perspective and an increasing focus on climate change
  • Active involvement of top management
  • A life cycle assessment and a focus on impacts across the entire supply chain
  • A drive towards the digitalization of environmental management system processes and data
  • Clearer and more transparent communication, with more accessible environmental reporting.

Although the high-level structure essentially remains unchanged, its readability and comprehension have been improved through: the introduction of the concept of Change Management, greater emphasis on climate change, a reorganization of requirements related to risks and opportunities, and clarifications regarding terms and definitions, document management, and internal audits.

  • ISO 14001: Why a new revision?

The revision of ISO 14001 represents an important step in the evolution of the standard and will introduce several improvements compared to the previous edition, integrating global issues and strengthening the role of leadership.

The last version of ISO 14001 dates back to 2015. Following an international consultation process, it was decided to update the standard to address new environmental challenges: climate resilience, biodiversity, circular economy, and greater environmental responsibility, linking environmental sustainability to strategic business objectives.

Bureau Veritas is preparing a comprehensive training plan to supportclients and auditors during the transition: refresher courses for auditors and companies, as well as ongoing support services throughout the transition period.
