The document tackles a critical global imperative: mitigating the environmental impact of buildings through carbon footprint reduction and simultaneously enhancing their capacity to withstand and adapt to the challenges posed by climate change.
In March 2024, leaders and experts from over 70 countries convened in Paris to endorse the "Chaillot Declaration", a global initiative aimed at accelerating building decarbonization and climate resilience. The document emphasizes the significance of sustainable urban development, innovative construction techniques, and energy-efficient retrofitting. The building sector accounts for more than one-third of global energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
With urbanization rapidly advancing - over half of the world's population already resides in urban areas - the demand for construction materials is set to increase dramatically. Simultaneously, construction, demolition, and renovation activities generate billions of tons of waste annually, much of which ends up in landfills.
