ISO/IEC 42001:2023: Certification for Artificial Intelligence

MANAGE AI WITH CONFIDENCE AND EXPERTISE

What is the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 standard?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming processes, products, and services across all industries. To support its responsible and trustworthy use, ISO and IEC developed ISO/IEC 42001:2023, the first international standard for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems (AIMS).

The standard provides a structured framework for governing AI, managing risks, and promoting transparency, security, and ethical practices in the use of AI systems.

Bureau Veritas offers ISO/IEC 42001 certification services and assesses compliance with the standard through qualified auditors with expertise in both management systems and AI projects. When required, industry specialists are also involved to ensure a thorough evaluation tailored to the organization's specific operational context.

How can you obtain ISO/IEC 42001 certification?

Bureau Veritas assesses the conformity of your Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS) with the requirements of ISO/IEC 42001:2023 and issues a certificate following a comprehensive audit process.
The assessment is based on two key stages:

  • Review of the management system documentation and supporting evidence
  • On-site or remote audit to evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented AI governance processes, controls, policies, and procedures. This assessment verifies that they comply with the requirements of the standard and are appropriately adapted to the organization's specific context.

This approach enables organizations to demonstrate a structured, responsible, and trustworthy management of Artificial Intelligence.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about ISO/IEC 42001:2023

  • Copilot said: How long do the ISO/IEC 42001 certification audit and annual surveillance audits take?

The duration of the ISO/IEC 42001 certification audit and subsequent annual surveillance audits depends on several factors, including the size of the organization, the number of employees and locations involved, and the complexity and scope of the Artificial Intelligence systems and projects being managed.
Organizations with more extensive AI activities, multiple sites, or complex AI applications may require longer audit durations to ensure a comprehensive assessment of the Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS).

  • How long is ISO/IEC 42001 certification valid?

The ISO/IEC 42001 certification is valid for three years. During this certification cycle, regular surveillance audits are conducted to verify the ongoing effectiveness of the Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS) and continued compliance with the requirements of the standard.
At the end of the three-year period, a recertification audit is required to renew the certification and maintain its validity.

  • Can ISO/IEC 42001 be integrated with other management systems?

Yes. Thanks to its High Level Structure (HLS), ISO/IEC 42001 can be easily integrated with existing management systems, such as ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO/IEC 27001 (Information Security Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), and other sustainability-related certification schemes.
This integrated approach helps organizations streamline processes, reduce duplication of efforts, and benefit from more efficient and coordinated audits across multiple management systems.

  • Copilot said: What is the current accreditation status of ISO/IEC 42001 certification?

Bureau Veritas is accredited by Accredia to provide ISO/IEC 42001 certification. Organizations can therefore benefit from an accredited certification process that enhances international recognition and strengthens the confidence of customers, partners, regulators, and other stakeholders in their approach to Artificial Intelligence governance.
Accredited certification demonstrates an organization's commitment to managing AI systems responsibly, transparently, and in accordance with internationally recognized requirements.
