What is the ISO 14064-2 Standard? 

Climate change is one of the most significant topics on political, scientific and economic agendas today and is therefore at the center of international discussions. The growing development of projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions or increasing their removal by local, national and international organizations requires reliable tools to objectively quantify, monitor and transparently report achieved results. 
 

To address this need, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) developed ISO 14064-2, a standard that provides a scientific and systematic framework for the planning, implementation and assessment of climate action projects. ISO 14064-2 is intended for organizations of all sectors that wish to develop and implement projects focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions or enhancing greenhouse gas removals. It establishes a clear framework for quantifying, monitoring and reporting project outcomes.

The standard specifies requirements for the planning and implementation of GHG projects, including the identification of relevant emission sources, sinks and reservoirs. It also defines requirements for monitoring, quantifying, documenting and reporting project performance, as well as for managing data quality.

How can ISO 14064-2 Certification be achieved?

  • Audit Team Selection
    The audit team is selected according to specific industry and process-related criteria to ensure that project validation and verification are carried out by qualified and experienced professionals.
  • Strategic Review
    Initial assessment of the client's project activities, relevant GHG sources, sinks and reservoirs, project boundaries, baseline scenario, quantification methodologies, monitoring framework, data management processes and quality assurance measures.
  • System Assessment and Risk Analysis
    Critical evaluation of the project and the measurement and quantification methodologies used. Review of procedures, documentation, and all tools and processes applied to implement and manage the project.

ISO 14064-2 is designed to be program-neutral. This means that its terms and concepts are compatible with other GHG initiatives, best practices, legislation and standards. Where a specific GHG program applies, its requirements are considered additional to those established by ISO 14064-2. To enable broad and flexible application, the standard defines both requirements and guidance at the project level.
