FSSC 22000 CERTIFICATION
Showing Your Commitment to Food Safety
Download Datenblatt als PDF
Due to increasing demand and pressure from consumers, retailers are now requesting their suppliers be able to demonstrate compliance with a recognized Food Safety standard. Standards have emerged over the past several years, some privately owned by suppliers or associations. However, the result was that each manufacturer was audited and certified against a multitude of Food Safety standards, causing confusion for both the manufacturer and consumer. The Foundation for Food Safety Certification combined ISO 22000 and PAS 220 and issued FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification), which has been benchmarked and approved by GFSI and is at the same level as the other GFSI approved standards (BRC, IFS, SQF) and might even replace them.
What is FSSC 22000?
FSSC 22000 is a certification scheme for food manufacturers and is owned by the Foundation of Food Safety Certification. It includes the following requirements:
- Food Safety Management System, in accordance with ISO 22000:2005
- Pre-requisite Programs, as stipulated by BSI-PAS 220:2008
- Additional requirements: Inventory of applicable regulation; Specifications for services and
Supervision of personnel in application of food safety principles.
What are the key benefits?
- It is an international food safety scheme
- It has been benchmarked and recognized by GFSI
- It is based on recognized standards
- Provides access to - or a "license" to sell - the major international retail chains
- Minimizes significant food risks
- Effectively controls internal processes and minimizes risk of failure

The FSSC 22000 scheme is only applicable for those companies who manufacture produts as detailed in the scheme.
No. FSSC 22000 should be seen as a necessary complement to ISO 9001, not just as a stand-alone standard. When combined, the resulting system will deliver excellence in food manufacturing & supply.
If your company is already certified in compliance with the British Retail Consortium (BRC) or the International Featured Standard (IFS), you will need a commitment from top management, a documented HACCP analysis and a review of in-house and external communication system. If your organisation is already certified against ISO 22000, then you have to implement the pre-requisites programme, in accordance with PAS 220 requisites, and some extra work must be done in order to include the scheme’s extra requirements.
The FSSC 22000 scheme requires that competent auditors perform internal audits. Bureau Veritas Certification offers ISO 22000 IRCA registered training sessions lasting 3 to 5 days, which can be arranged in-house.
